On Wednesday, Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane was in attendance for a ceremonial bill signing of Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 255, an initiative that aims to make it easier for law enforcement officials to gather the necessary evidence they need to prosecute sexual offenders in a timely manner. The new law will allow state police department to distribute sexual assault kits to hospitals and allow health care providers to conduct sexual assault examinations without an unconscious victim’s consent if it is suspected they are the victim of sexual assault.

Also in attendance at the bill signing were Holly Renz and Barbra Bachmeier, the two nurses that brought this issue to Sen. Lanane’s attention. Sen. Lanane noted that this type of citizen participation is a perfect example of democracy in action.
