INDIANAPOLIS – Senate Democrat Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) issued the following statement regarding Governor-elect Eric Holcomb’s legislative agenda.
“While I look forward to working with our incoming governor when he says he wants to address our crumbling infrastructure and poor health metrics, it is our caucus’ belief that the state should be taking additional steps to ‘take Indiana to the next level.’
“I am disappointed the governor-elect failed to mention issues that Hoosiers have made clear are important to them; from redistricting reform and amending the civil rights statute to include all Hoosiers, to a bold expansion in prekindergarten education, I was hoping the governor-elect would take the lead on these issues.
“The legislative supermajorities have cut taxes on corporations and on financial institutions so much that we have limited our ability to fund essential state services like infrastructure. The only option Statehouse Republicans have left is to tax everyone who buys gasoline.
“Given that is the only option they are offering, our caucus feels placing a moratorium on the tax breaks that benefit big business will enable us to capture the revenue we need to get the job done and get the job done right.
“It is my hope that our new governor will work across the aisle to develop a tax structure that does not place the burden of improving our infrastructure and other state services solely on the backs of working Hoosier families.”
Sen. Lanane represents Indiana Senate District 25 which includes portions of Madison and Delaware counties, including the City of Muncie and the southeastern portion of the City of Anderson.
