Melton: Independent investigation needed after Trump fires FBI Director

In response to the firing of F.B.I. Director James Comey, Indiana State Senator Eddie Melton (D-Merrillville) released the following statement:

“The Trump administration has yet again made a swift and irrational decision that validates the concerns that many Americans have with President Trump and his aides and their connection with the Russian Government.

The recent firing of F.B.I. Director James Comey, shows the immediate need for an independent investigation into the Russian interference of the 2016 election and Russian ties to the Trump campaign. The American people deserve answers.

During the 2017 legislative session, Senate Democrats offered Senate Resolution 32 which would have urged the Indiana Congressional Delegation to support U.S. House Resolution 356, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, which would create a bipartisan-appointed commission to investigate foreign interference in the 2016 election. The resolution was sent to the Senate Elections Committee where the Republican Supermajority denied it a hearing.

The need for an independent investigation is not about politics, but pursuing justice and ensuring our democracy is protected.”
