INDIANAPOLIS—Today, the Legislative Council, a bipartisan and bicameral committee, met to discuss the assignment of study topics for the summer. Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) and House Democratic Leader Scott Pelath (D-Michigan City), both members of the Legislative Council, proposed a study of what laws and policies in Indiana would need to be changed in response to federal healthcare laws, including dangerous provisions found in the American Health Care Act (AHCA). Lanane released the following statements in response:

“In the wake of the passage of the ACHA in the U.S. House of Representatives and the budget proposal presented by President Trump, hundreds of thousands of people in this state will soon be relying on the General Assembly to prepare for the fallout that these policy decisions from Washington will have in our state.

“This proposed study topic is to ensure what changes policy makers in Indiana may need to implement to protect healthcare for Hoosiers. We need to be looking forward, and not just when members are in session for a few months next year.

“As Washington, D.C., moves to dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and leave 23 million Americans without healthcare coverage, I am pleased to see that legislative leaders in Indiana have decided to move in a serious direction.

“This dismantling will surely impact our state’s version of Medicaid expansion, HIP 2.0. leaving 400,000 Hoosiers without proper coverage. I would like to see the framework of the ACA remain so this statutory insurance program, crafted and championed by then-Governor Mike Pence, can remain in place.

“I am hopeful the study committee will find some viable options to preserve healthcare coverage for the citizens of this state, even in the face of constant uncertainty coming from Washington.”
