INDIANAPOLIS—Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) released the following statement regarding the decision by Republican leadership to move forward with a marriage constitutional amendment.
“Republicans have again started us down a path that in ten years will be reviled as discriminatory and intolerant.
“There have been countless opportunities to set this manufactured dispute aside. Instead, Republican leadership impetuously insists on moving ahead and forcing the legislature into a needless fight.
“A fight that Hoosiers don’t want, a fight that distracts from real issues, a fight that makes Indiana a less attractive place to start a business or raise a family.
“There’s still time. Cooler heads can still prevail. I ask members of the legislature to consider this. We have an opportunity this session to strengthen schools, to make health care reform work and raise Hoosiers’ incomes.
“Do we want to be remembered for addressing these critical issues or for locking prejudice and hate into the state’s most respected document?
“Hoosiers elect us to make these choices. They expect us to objectively consider the issues that will move Indiana forward not bog us down in a debate from yesterday. One thing is certain, Hoosiers will not soon forget our decision.”
