Hoosiers, here are some things you should know as residents of Indiana:
Deadline to Apply for Student Aid
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) allows individuals to apply for federal and state aid for higher education in one online application. The deadline to apply this year is April 15, 2018. You can apply and find more information on FAFSA here: https://fafsa.ed.gov/.
Tax Deadline and Filing Assistance
The deadline to file your 2017 state and federal taxes is Tuesday, April 17, 2018. If you have not filed your taxes, you must file or apply for an extension before that date. Those with incomes below $66,000 may be able to file taxes for free using an IRS or State of Indiana partner organization. To find out if you qualify, and to see how to file for free, use the following link https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/jsp/index.jsp.
If you haven’t been to the BMV recently, you may be surprised to learn that there are new required updates to your Indiana driver’s license. If you have not updated your license or other state credentials to include the Real ID status by October 1, 2020, you will not be able to board an airplane or visit a federal facility. To get the Real ID indicator, you must present the following documents when you go into the BMV: a document showing proof of identity (including name and birthdate), one document showing lawful status, proof of your social security number as well as two documents showing proof of residency. For more information about Real ID, visit the BMV website.
