Legislature to study Melton topics this summer: Gary economic development, DCS

INDIANAPOLIS – Today, the Legislative Council, comprised of leaders from each of the four caucuses, met to assign proposed policy study topics to interim study committees this summer.

State Senator Eddie Melton (D-Gary) had two topics approved during the 2018 regular session awaiting assignment. The first is to create an oversight committee to review the Department of Child Services (DCS) after allegations from the former director that the department’s current policies and lack of resources are putting children’s safety at risk.
The second is to explore the underutilized economic assets in Gary to support a comprehensive and strategic economic development plan.

“I am extremely pleased that both of these important proposals will be reviewed by the legislature this summer,” Sen. Melton said. “The study of DCS will be vital to ensuring that as a state we are doing what is best for our most vulnerable children. I am also looking forward to working with legislators as well as the City of Gary to formulate a strategic economic plan that the legislature can support to move Gary forward.”

The DCS review has been assigned to the Interim Study Committee on Courts and the Judiciary and the study of Gary’s economic development opportunities has been assigned to the Interim Study Committee on Commerce and Economic Development.

The Child Welfare and Public Policy Group that is currently reviewing DCS will release their final report on July 1 and the interim committee studying DCS will begin meeting afterwards in order to use the report’s findings to come up with legislative solutions to the department’s issues.
